<h4>Lose It or Lose It</h4>
<p>There is no doubt that losing excess fat will improve our health on so many different levels.  When it comes to excess fat, we either lose it or lose life, and a HUGE component of losing excess fat is water.</p>
<p>There are several reasons that water helps us lose weight, the main one is  that water is the transportation system of the body.  If you think of the body as an object that is constantly replacing its parts and renewing its tissues and organs then you can begin to see just what water transportation does for us.</p>
<h4>Moving Materials</h4>
<p>Water moves our blood cells away from the lungs, kidneys, intestines, and liver where they have  loaded up on protein for repairing and building body parts and oxygen and nutrients for the cells to use as fuel.  As the water moves our blood cells to the tiny blood vessels called capillaries, they deliver their cargo to the cells.  The now empty blood cells then pick up the trash that the tissue have dumped and the water carries the blood cells back toward the lungs, kidneys and liver where the waste products from the tissues are dumped and a fresh load of oxygen, protein and nutrients are loaded for a return trip to the cells.</p>
<h4>Low Water, Slow Transportation</h4>
<p>When you do not drink enough water the whole transportation system slows down and the body begins to horde water because it thinks a drought is occurring.  This allows toxic waste to build up in your system and it slows down all of the building, energy creating, and healing that your body does each day.  If you are losing fat, water is the thing that transports the fat from your fat cells to be burned for energy.  Not enough water? Your fat loss slows along with all other process of the body.</p>
<h4>&#8230;Drink And Be Merry</h4>
<p>All of this is a very precise way of telling you why you should drink 64ounces of cold water a day.  OK, it doesn&#8217;t have to be cold, but cold water burns calories because the body has to heat it up.  Now you know why you should be drinking 8 glasses, or 64 ounces, of water every day.</p>

<p>Getting fat seems to be part of life after 30, what with kids, work, and not having enough energy.  Then there are the hormone changes that take place, especially with us women.  It sometimes seems that we aren&#8217;t supposed to enjoy eating after 30.  It can be scary to see your mother&#8217;s or even your grandmother&#8217;s body beginning to take the place of your own.</p>
<h3>2. <strong>Dial The Stress Down</strong></h3>
<p>Some of the problem may be because our 30&#8242;s is a very busy, stressful time.  We are getting married, starting families, focusing on our careers and sometimes getting divorced. This constant stress can result in our bodies producing high levels of cortisol.  Cortisol has been linked to weight gain in many studies. Besides the cortisol problem, many people relieve stress by eating.</p>
<p>You need to take time to do things you enjoy that are good for you and reduce stress.  Sports, reading, walking, swimming or whatever relaxes you should be made a part of your everyday life.</p>
<h3>3. <strong>Calories Vs. Bulk<br />
</strong></h3>
<p>A calorie is merely a measure of energy.  Technically it is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 ml of water 1 degree Celsius.  So just considering calories alone isn&#8217;t a good idea.  What you need is food that has a high bulk to calorie ratio.  For instance a Snickers bar—my favorite—has about 271 calories in it.  Whereas a head of lettuce has about 15 calories in it.  You could eat 18 heads of lettuce and still have eaten less calories than you got in the one Snickers bar.  OK, so that is a bit extreme, but you could eat 3 apples and get the same amount of calories as in one Snickers bar and the apple will fill you up more.</p>
<h3>4. <strong>Give Your Metabolism a Boost With Cardio</strong></h3>
<p>Cardiovascular exercise boosts your metabolism which is the rate at which your body is burning fuel.  Not only does it raise your metabolism during the exercise, but keeps it elevated for up to 24 hours. Do things like biking, spin classes, kickboxing and power-walking. Exercise this way at least 3 times a week or more for 40-minutes.</p>
<h3>5. <strong>Here Today, Gone Tomorrow<br />
</strong></h3>
<p>Once you hit the old three-oh, all things remaining equal, you will lose a half a pound of muscle each year. To make matters worse, you will also add a pound of fat. Great Scott! That means by the time you are 40, you will have gained 10 pounds of fat and lost 5 pounds of lean muscle tissue. Lean muscle tissue helps you burn fat! <p>Keeping track of doing all of the switches was not difficult in and of itself, but remembering to do them was hard at first.  After the first week I was pretty good at doing them and by the second week they were becoming a habit.  I started the month weighing&#8211;this is embarassing&#8211;242 pounds and I purposely didn&#8217;t weigh myself at all this month. Losing weight is simple on paper: consume less calories than your body uses in a day.  The reality is much different for several reasons.  For instance, our bodies will adjust the amount of calories they use in a day depending on how much physical exercise we do, what our mental state is, and what it perceives as a starvation threat. This doesn&#8217;t include inherited tendencies or diseases and conditions which can also affect how much our body&#8217;s use calories in a day.</p>
<p><strong>Metabolism</strong></p>
<p>Metabolism is the term that we use when we are talking about the rate at which our bodies are using calories. A high metabolic rate would mean that our body is using a lot of calories and a low metabolic rate would mean that our body is using very little calories.</p>
<p>If you combine all of these factors and then throw in the psychological factors of why we overeat, you have a pretty complicated picture of how to lose the weight we have gained.  Still, beneath it all is that over riding fact that we need to figure out a way to consume less calories than our body uses over a long enough period of time to lose the weight we want to lose.</p>
<p><strong>Don&#8217;t Be Desperate</strong></p>
<p>Often we become desperate to lose weight and resort to <em>fad diets</em> that partially work if you can stick to them. I say partially work because true <a href='http://www.thedietclearinghouse.com/link/weight-loss'>weight loss</a> is weight that you lose and keep off.  Fad diets never address how to change your lifestyle enough to lose the unhealthy weight and keep it off for good. <li><em>Calculate your activity level</em>. Use a <a href="/ExerciseCalc">calorie 	calculator</a> that will give you the approximate number of calories 	you use each day. Keeping a daily activity journal will help you a 	lot with this task.</li>
<li><em>Keep track of how much you eat</em>. Keep a daily food 	journal and write down everything you eat each day and jot down the 	calories for each food.</li>
<li><em>Add it up</em>. Now take the two totals and find the 	difference between your BMR and how many calories you eat in a day.  	If you are eating more calories than your BMR then you have found 	the reason you are over weight.</li>
</ol>
<p><em><strong>Example</strong></em>:</p>
<p>Susan&#8217;s BMR was 1400 cal. and she uses 900 cal. daily in exercise, moving around and finishing her daily chores. To keep  her weight stable, she needs to consume 2300 cal.  After writing a food journal, Susan discovers she is consuming 2550 cal. a day. That is 250 cal. more than she needs. Susan could end up gaining 1 lb. every 2 weeks.</p>
<p>See how easy it is to gain weight when you are not paying attention to what you are eating and how much?  The good news is is that we can reverse this entire process so that our bodies are gradually losing weight rather than gaining it.  Once you have your data and see how your situation stacks up against Susan&#8217;s, you can reverse the process by reducing the calories you are eating and increasing the calories your body is using.</p>
